It gained independence from Belgium (administered UN trusteeship) on 1 July 1962.  It is a Presidential Republic with the President sitting as the Head of State and Prime Minister as the Head of Government. It runs a bicameral legislative system of government consisting of Senate and Chamber of Deputies. English and French are the official languages while Swahili is commonly in used in commercial centres. Rwanda is a predominantly Christian country. It has a mixed legal system which is based on German and Belgian models and Customary law. It has an area size of 26,338 sq. km. Rwanda is rated among the least corrupt African countries in Transparency International’s 2018 Corruption Perceptions Index and is one of Africa’s leading most business-friendly country.

Demographic Information: Rwanda  has an estimated population of 12.71 million comprising mostly of younger population (less than 25 years) which makes up about 60.1% of the population, those in the age bracket of 25-64 years makes up about 37.3% of the population and above 65 years age group makes up about 2.6% of the population. Broad Economic Overview: The Rwanda economy depends on Agriculture and Tourism. Agriculture accounts for about 29% of GDP, employs about 67% of the labour force and contributes around 80% of foreign income. Rwanda is not rich in mineral deposits compared to other African countries but it has some high-value minerals such as gold, coltan, wolframite, cassiterite and precious stones (aquamarine, ruby, sapphire). Tourism sector is also a critical part of the Rwanda economy as the country positions itself as the continents hub for hosting of international conferences thanks to significant investments in infrastructure. Expansion of RwandAir, the national airline, with the opening of new routes, should accompany the development of the sector. Rwanda’s economy suffered heavily during the 1994 genocide but it has since recovered having made substantial progress in stabilizing and rehabilitating its economy well beyond pre-1994 levels. Real GDP grew 9.4% in 2019 having recorded 7.4% compounded annual GDP growth in the past 5 years.  Its currency is Rwanda Franc.  Main exports include tea, coffee, hides and tin ore etc Major imports include petroleum products, cement and construction materials, steel, foodstuff, machinery and equipment etc.

Investment Opportunities: Rwanda has sustained high economic growth in the past 10 years, sustained by an investor friendly climate and significant progress in governance and relative political stability. Growth momentum is expected to remain strong, driven by public and private investment through the country’s s National Transformation Strategy (NST). This is a new medium-term development strategy (vision 2050) aimed at achieving high quality and standards of Life for Rwandans and developing modern Infrastructure across the country. Some of the ongoing projects to boost growth include the Bugesera Airport project, Gisagara thermal power plant project and infrastructure in the special economic zones (Bugesera, Rwamagana). As part of the strategy, a “Made in Rwanda” program is expected to promote local production in order to reduce imports. The country aims to promote industrialization and attain a structural shift in the export base to high-value goods and services with the aim of growing exports by 17% annually. Rwanda’s mining, oil and gas potential is still to be fully exploited while preliminary studies indicate potential significant reserves in rare earth minerals, petroleum and gas. Investment opportunities are also available in the following sectors: agriculture, tourism, ICT, infrastructure, real estate and construction, energy, financial services, health services and education.
