Country overview: Swaziland also known as Eswatini is a landlock country located in Southern Africa and surrounded by South Africa and Mozambique. It gained independence from United Kingdom on 6 September 1968. It is an absolute monarchy with the King sitting as the Head of State and Prime Minister as the Head of Government. Its administrative capital is Mbabane while its legislative and royal capital is Lobamba. It has an administrative structure divided into 4 regions. It runs a bicameral legislative system comprising of Senate and House of Assembly. English and siSwati are the official languages. Christianity is the major religion plus indigenous beliefs and small representations of other major world faiths. It has a mixed legal system consisting of civil law, customary law and common law. It has an area size of 17,364 sq km.
Demographic Information: Eswatini has an estimated population of 1.104 million comprising mostly of younger population (less than 25 years) which makes up about 52.3% of the population, those in the age bracket of 25-64 years makes up about 43.8% of the population and above 65 years age group makes up about 3.9% of the population. Average population density is estimated at 66.06 inhabitants/km2. In terms of human development indicators, it has a life expectancy of 60.7 years (Women) and 56.5 years (Men). It achieved universal primary education with a 115.16% Primary enrolment rate in 2018 and overall literacy level of 88.4% as at 2015.
Broad Economic Overview: Eswatini’s economy relies largely on South Africa and Southern Africa Customs Union (SACU) revenue. Approximately 70% of the population rely on subsistence agriculture. Eswatini Agriculture is strongly linked to the manufacturing sector. The manufacturing sector accounts for 40% of GDP and the sector consists primarily of five export-oriented industries: wood pulp production, drink processing, fruit canning, textile manufacturing and sugar processing. In recent times, activities in the mining sector have reduced to small scale (Coal, gold, diamond, and quarry stone mines) and the only iron ore mine closed in 2014. Real GDP growth was estimated at 1.1% in 2019, an appreciable decline from 2.4% in 2018 and it managed to achieve a modest 5-year compound annual GDP growth of 1.5%. Its currency is Swaziland Lilangeni which is pegged to South Rands. South Africa Rands is also accepted in the country. Main export includes Sugar, timber, canned fruit, soft drink concentrates, cotton yarn, refrigerators, citrus etc. Major imports include petroleum product, foodstuff, machinery and equipment, textile, vehicles, chemicals etc.
Investment Opportunities: Eswatini government is in the process of implementing structural reforms contained in its Strategic Roadmap for Economic Recovery and the National Development Plan (2019–22). The reforms prioritise infrastructure investment, agriculture production, and economic diversification. The government has implemented initiatives to develop and promote indigenous Swazi entrepreneurship, particularly in small and medium enterprises), and to promote industrialisation across the country. Priority sectors for investment include: infrastructure investment, ICT sector (telemedicine, internet infrastructure, E-commerce and online services, financial online services, broadcasting service and local content development etc), mining sector (exploration, mining, up to the marketing of mineral products (coal, gold, diamond and quarry), agribusiness sector (aalue addition of agricultural produce e.g. tomatoes, peppers, sweet corn, citrus, meat etc.), tourism sector, energy sector and manufacturing sector (high-end fashion textile manufacturing, wood processing, downstream value added sugar products, manufacturing of essential medicines, Integrated waste management -green, non-burn technologies etc)
