Country overview: Ghana is located in West Africa along the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean. It shares borders with Togo to the east, Burkina Faso to the north and Cote d’Ivoire to the West. It got its independence from United Kingdom on 6 March 1957. Its constitutional capital is Accra with 16 Administrative regions. It is a multiparty presidential republic with President sitting as both the Head of state and government. It runs a unicameral national assembly, and its official language is English. Christianity is the predominant religion along with Islam and other traditional religion. It has a mixed legal system comprising of English common law and some customary law. It has an area size of 238,533 million sq km. Ghana is the first sub-Saharan country to gain its independence and it is renowned for its stable democracy and deepen democratic governance. Seven successful and uninterrupted elections have strengthened the effectiveness of the country’s key national institutions.


Demographic Information: Ghana has an estimated population of 29.34 million comprising mostly of younger population (less than 25 years) which makes up about 56.1% of the population, those in the age bracket of 25-64 years makes up of about 39.5% of the population and above 65 years age group makes up of about 4.4% of the population. Average population density is estimated at 137 inhabitants/km2. In terms of human development indicators, it has a life expectancy of 70.8 years (Women) and 65.6 years (Men). It achieved universal primary education with a 104.84% Primary enrollment rate in 2019 and overall literacy level of 76.6% as at 2015.


Broad Economic Overview: Ghana is well-endowed with natural resources with gold and cocoa export serving as the major foreign exchange earnings of the country. It is Africa’s second-biggest gold producer and second-largest cocoa producer in addition to being rich in diamonds and crude oil deposit. Agriculture is estimated to contribute about 20% of GDP and employs about 35% of the country’s workforce. Ghana is placed among Africa’s 10 fastest growing economies having achieved high growth momentum since 2017. Real GDP expanded 6.1% in 2019 having recorded 4.5% compounded annual GDP growth in the past 5 years. Ghana’s growth prospects remain positive, with increased output and stable global prices for its main export commodities. Ghana’s currency is Cedis, but the currency remains volatile reflective of import-driven demand. Main export includes gold, cocoa, diamonds, oil, timber, manganese ore, bauxite, tuna etc. Major imports include refined petroleum product, foodstuffs, and capital equipment.


Investment Opportunities: Ghana has taken several initiatives including a 10-Point Industrialization agenda which aims to increase productivity and boost output in key primary sectors and value chains. Part of the plan includes the decentralisation of industrial growth through the One District, One Factory policy, Strategic Anchor Industries and Industrial Parks and Special Economic Zones. The country is ready to partner with investors who are willing to transform the agriculture sector by improving on sustainability of production of exportable horticultural crops and animal products, reducing the size of its food import bill, encouraging domestic processing to mitigate post-harvest losses.
