Country overview: Togo is located in West Africa. It shares borders with Ghana on the West, Benin on the East and Burkina Faso on the North. It gained its independence from France on 27 April 1960. Its constitutional capital is Lome with 5 Administrative divisions. It is a multiparty Presidential Republic with the President sitting as Head of State and Prime Minister as Head of Government. It runs a unicameral national assembly as the legislative arm of the government. Official language is French but other popular local languages include Ewe, Mina, Kabye and Dagomba. Christianity, Folk and Islam are the predominant religion along with other traditional religions. The legal system is modelled after French civil law and some customary law. It has an area size of 56,785 sq km. Togo’s territorial waters are secured and boasts of one of West Africa’s few natural deep-water ports. Its seaport offers a relatively safe zone for international shippers and has the potential to become a regional hub.
Demographic Information: Togo has an estimated population of 8.28 million comprising mostly of younger population (less than 25 years) which makes up about 58.8% of the population, those in the age bracket of 25-64 years makes up of about 37.7% of the population and above 65 years age group makes up of about 3.5% of the population. Average population density is estimated at 152 inhabitants/km2. In terms of human development indicators, it has a life expectancy of 73.7 years (Women) and 68.4 years (Men). It achieved universal primary education with a 124.32% Primary enrolment rate in 2019 and overall literacy level of 63.7% as at 2015.
Broad Economic Overview: Togo is a stable democracy having achieved political stability in the past 20 years and its economy is heavily reliant on agriculture which account for 60% of the labour force. Cocoa, coffee, and cotton and other agricultural products generate about 20% of export earnings with cotton being the most important cash crop. The economy is undiversified, with a limited industrial structure. Togo is among the world’s largest producers of phosphate and seeks to develop its carbonate phosphate reserves, which provide more than 20% of export earnings. Other mineral resources found in the country include limestone, iron, manganese, marble, platinum, bauxite and clay (transformed into clinker) which has fuelled a dynamic cement industry. The country’s Port (Lome Port) is a major asset and it is one of the largest ports in the region, and the transport of goods to neighbouring countries has led to the creation of a services industry. Togo is subject to negative external factors, including the impact of the economic slowdown in Nigeria and lower commodity prices. It has consistently achieved a robust GDP growth in the past 5 years having grown 5.3% (5yr compound growth) over the period. It’s currency is CFA franc which is pegged to the euro and has maintained stable inflation rate over the past years. Main export includes Cotton, phosphate, coffee, cocoa etc. Major imports include petroleum product, foodstuffs and machinery and Equipment.
Investment Opportunities: The Togolese government has an ambitious development plan meant to attract private investment and to establish Togo as a financial, tourism and logistics hub but also to modernise the agricultural, extractive and manufacturing sectors. To achieve this goal, the government has started privatizing key sectors of the economy, including telecommunications and banking. The government also plan to adopt a program-based budgeting from 2021 in order to improve the efficiency of public expenditure. Efforts to reform the country and make it more business-friendly have resulted in boosting its ranking in the latest Doing Business report. Togo is now among the world’s top reformers according to this index.
